Sutter Home 1

Size: Large · Small

Immigrating to the USA from northern Italy in the 1920's, the Trinchero family moved to Napa Valley in 1948. Although they were poor, they took all of their money and purchased an abandoned winery called Sutter Home. Working from a truck where they collected and recycled bottles, the Trinchero's worked extremely hard to produce their first wines. Being frugal was a necessity, so the grapes were used over and over...which in the end became a great success story!! The varietal was Zinfandel. The juice after being pressed twice was a light pink color. The outcome, the first White Zinfandel wine produced!! You might wonder why they didn't change the name of the winery from Sutter Home to Trinchero Family Wines....well the sign on the winery was large and it was too costly to remove so they kept the name and today Sutter Home Wines is the 7th largest winery in the world!! Believe it or not, they are still a family-owned business! Isn't that awesome?!

Colleen Le Masters and Barry Wiss were kind enough to give us a complete tour of the winery. Education is one of the special features at Trinchero! They have wine courses held at Sutter Home and even have two games, the Napa Wine Challenge and the Aroma Wheel of Fortune that we played to test our wine knowledge and our senses!! Not common sense, but rather the different aromas and scents that are found in wines, some coming from the earth, some from fruits & berries and others from chemicals. They have dedicated a great deal of time and energy into educating consumers about wine. I applaud them for this great service!!

The height of our afternoon was a sensational lunch provided to us from their Winery Chef, Jeffery Starr! The flavors of the food paired nicely with the aromatic wines chosen by Barry and Jeffery! Here is a sneak peak of what we tasted at Trinchero!!
